“L’umile frate che Malta ha amato”
Noel Muscat OFM

Era Mercoledì 14 maggio 1902 all’alba.

FRANCIS OF ASSISI AND
BONAVENTURE’S THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS

Noel Muscat OFM

The way in which Bonaventure of Bagnoregio presents the figure of Saint Francis in the Legenda Maior Sancti Francisci is strongly enigmatic.1 In a sense, Bonaventure knew very well the biographical sources of the life of Francis, particularly those by Thomas of Celano and Julian of Speyer. He also sought to meet personally with those companions of the Saint who were still alive in 1260.

The pilgrims who go to Assisi are sure to have visited a small oratory, in a narrow alleyway going down from Via del Ceppo della Catena, the street which from Piazza del Comune leads to the Basilica of Santa Chiara. This oratory is known by the name “San Francesco Piccolino”.

800 years since st. Clare joined Francis at the Portiuncula

Fr. Noel Muscat OFM
On 28 March 2011 it will be exactly 800 years since Clare of Assisi left her paternal house in Piazza San Rufino in Assisi, to join Francis at the Portiuncula chapel. On that night the Order of Poor Ladies was born, which was to become the Second Franciscan Order, or Order of Saint Clare. This year the event will be celebrated with special solemnity in many monasteries of the Poor Clares. In order to mark the moment of the evangelical vocation of the pianticella, or little plant, of Francis, as Clare would call herself, Noel Muscat ofm is presenting another paper in this section of our website entitled “The Night when Clare of Assisi left her Paternal House”.
